NTCC History
The End of the Road to Nowhere
In 1985, developers for Tampa Palms asked the city to annex its development into the City of Tampa. Not too much later, the developers of Hunter's Green followed suit, thus creating the largest new annexation of residential acreage in 100 years. Bruce B. Downs was known as the "Road to Nowhere" and was single lane north of Bearss. Tampa Palms started selling homes in 1987 and Hunter's Green in 1989 and the rest is history.
In late 1992, a contingent of area business leaders gathered to form what was expected to be an Area Chamber of Commerce. After several meetings, the consensus was to form a "community council" since the Greater Tampa Chamber already existed and was thought to have the ability to meet the needs of business interests in the area.
Northeast Area Council becomes NTCC
Thus, the Northeast Area Council was born in early 1993. Frank Margarella was the organizing President, which was charged with formalizing an organization to serve the citizens and the businesses of the Area. It was during this organizing stage that the group took what was to be a name that, not only identified a community, but a lifestyle like no other in the Tampa Bay Area. Late in 1993, The New Tampa Community Council was incorporated as a non-profit civic group dedicated to preserving and enhancing the lifestyle of the residents of New Tampa.
The original imaginary boundary of New Tampa was north of Fletcher to the County Line and west to 275 and east to75. Today some consider the southern border to be Fowler (to include USF) and north into Pasco County to Highway 54. By the year 2013, one third of Hillsborough County's residents will reside in New Tampa. In 1995, the 33647 zip code was ranked in the Top Ten in the U.S. for Fastest Growing Upscale Communities.
Today The New Tampa Community Council is considered the strongest advocate for the community it represents. Several other organizations such as The New Tampa Transportation Task Force and New Tampa Votes were spin-offs of The NTCC.
NTCC Today
Membership in the NTCC is a strong vote in favor of better roads, schools, police and fire protection and emergency preparedness. The NTCC was also a key player in the establishment of an "Over Lay District" which assures high standards be maintained in areas of residential and commercial development. From specific signage requirements to landscaping and design codes, these codes dictate the aesthetics for all future development in New Tampa. The NTCC continues to provide its members with access to every level of public official and every relevant organization serving New Tampa. The work continues as new challenges arise everyday. We must all be diligent in our duty to our Community for today and the future.
